Bill Gersh studied sculpture and painting at the State University of New York in New Paltz, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in art education. He taught art in public schools while pursuing independent graduate studies in painting and film. In the mid-1960s, he lived in Woodstock and New York City and worked in media ranging from environmental art to eight-millimeter movies and theater pieces. In 1969, he moved to Berkeley “to see what the flowerchild/hippie thing was”. Two years later, he moved to Taos “in a 1948 maroon and purple Dodge”. In 1971, Gersh moved to Magic Tortoise, an artists’ community about 20 miles north of Taos. There, he designed and built a home and studio. His interests included performance poetry, book making and teaching courses in landscape painting, sculpture and printmaking. Gersh’s works are shown nationally at galleries in California, Texas, Idaho and New Mexico.
