Handell lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where he began drawing as a young child with chalk on the city streets. He began his formal art studies of drawing and anatomy at age sixteen and later studied at the Art Students League of New York, and painted for four years in Paris in his twenties. He is well known for his painting workshops, which he conducts nationwide as well as abroad. Handell excels in pastel and oil. He is one of the first American artists to paint en plein air with pastels.
Handell is represented by Ventana Fine Art Gallery in Santa Fe. His work has been included in numerous exhibitions, galleries, museums, and public and private collections worldwide.
It continues to be the mission of the Capitol Art Foundation to build a permanent collection of New Mexico masterworks that are representative of New Mexico’s rich and diverse cultural, historical, and artistic traditions.
