Medium : Drawing/ink

Dimensions: 22 inx28 in

Patricia studied drawing and painting at Northern Illinois University in Chicago. Her chosen medium was watercolor, ink, and pencil drawing. Living and painting in New Mexico had long been her dream, and she finally moved here in the late 1990s. Unfortunately, she lost her battle with cancer in 1998, but did continue her art until then.

She explains how her illness became part of her creative process:

“I feel the design should be part of the process of painting, not worked out elaborately in arranging the elements in advance. Cancer may be a gratuitous event: living with, rather than living against. The medium should show fluidity, directness, a stream of consciousness…”

Painting through the pain was her mission:

“When constant pain is an everyday occurrence, when your day is maxed after just two or three hours, what do you do? Paint, paint, paint. Place yourself on the journey, express the fear and the concern for the things left undone.”

Her body of work attests to the healing nature of art and creativity.
