Jack Slentz is a New Mexico–based sculptor whose work explores the intersection of natural materials, ancient symbolism, and minimalist form. With a deep respect for wood as both a medium and metaphor, Slentz often creates pieces that evoke the architecture of memory—structures that feel rooted in time, land, and elemental experience.
Ancient Tower (2002) is a tall, contemplative sculpture carved from cherry wood, a material known for its warmth, strength, and deepening color over time. The piece suggests a monument or sentinel—part totem, part architectural fragment—calling to mind prehistoric stone towers, ritual columns, or desert cairns. Its simplicity is intentional, inviting the viewer to consider scale, shadow, and the quiet gravity of verticality.
Slentz’s artistic vocabulary is grounded in craft but reaches toward abstraction. His work often deals with presence and absence, using voids, cuts, and contrasts to suggest inner space and the passing of time. Ancient Tower stands as a testament to this sensibility—a solitary form that communicates with silence rather than spectacle.
A long-time presence in the Southwest arts community, Slentz has exhibited widely and contributed to public collections and installations across the region. His sculptures often encourage stillness and introspection, drawing us into a dialogue with both material and meaning.
