Janet Stein Romero was a painter for over forty years. She lived in the small village of El Ancon, just outside Ribera, New Mexico, where she shared a home, studios, and an artist compound in an idyllic valley with her husband, Násario Romero, who is also an artist.
Janet was born in New York City and moved to New Mexico in 1966 to attend the University of New Mexico, where she earned a Master’s in Painting and Drawing (MFA). She taught art for many years, both in Las Vegas, New Mexico, as well as at Highlands University and United World College, both in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Her efforts to integrate art and art techniques into school curricula made a tremendous impact in her community and surrounding art institutions.
Janet traveled extensively in Venezuela and Mexico after retiring from teaching and produced new bodies of work. One, in particular, involved a series of paintings on silk that related to her travels. Her work is exhibited and collected in galleries and collections throughout the Southwest.
